Buc-ee’s Challenges Barc-ee’s in Court Over Name and Logo Similarity

Texas-based Buc-ee’s, a popular convenience store chain, has filed another lawsuit—this time against a small Missouri business named “Barc-ee’s.” The company claims the coffee and food shop’s name and logo look too much like its own.

Unlike Buc-ee’s, Barc-ee’s is not a chain and doesn’t sell gas. Still, Buc-ee’s argues that the logo is too similar to its famous beaver trademark.

The lawsuit states: “By using the Barc-ee’s Logo—a colorable imitation of the Buc-ee’s Logo—Defendants have violated Buc-ee’s Trademarks. [Barc-ee’s] actions regarding the use of Barc-ee’s Logo have all been without authorization of Buc-ee’s.”

This isn’t the first time Buc-ee’s has taken legal action against businesses with similar branding. Earlier this year, the company sued a North Texas gas station chain, Super Fuels, for using a logo with a cartoon dog in a cape, which Buc-ee’s said looked too much like its beaver.

Similar copycat stores have also appeared in Mexico. In 2023, a viral video showed a shop called “Buk-II’s – Supermercado” with a gopher mascot instead of a beaver. Another store, “LUC-KY’s,” opened in Tamaulipas last December with a raccoon logo.

Buc-ee’s continues to protect its brand by legally challenging businesses it believes are copying its name and logo.
