How to Create a Church Logo: A Student’s Journey
Artwork by A-Level student Szymon Szczerba from Coleg Cambria’s Yale campus has officially been chosen as the new logo and branding for St Giles Church in Wrexham. His design, inspired by the life of Saint Giles and featuring a symbolic red deer, will now appear across the church’s social media platforms, website, printed materials, and merchandise.
The new branding launch comes at an important time, as St Giles transitions into a Mission Hub Church, expanding its services, community activities, and outreach programs.
Competition and Selection
St Giles Church partnered with Coleg Cambria to run a design competition among A Level Art, Craft, and Design students. There were 19 submissions, and Szymon’s design was selected for its strong storytelling and spiritual symbolism.
Revd James Tout, Vicar of St Giles, praised the work, saying:
“We are delighted with Szymon’s design, which will be used widely to promote the mission and work of the church. It reflects the life and faith of Saint Giles and reminds us of humility, compassion, and care for the poor.”
Student’s Creative Inspiration
St Giles, a seventh-century hermit who rescued a red deer from hunters, inspired it. The deer became a symbol of compassion and empathy, which Szymon incorporated into the logo to reflect the church’s values.
It was especially meaningful to him to win the competition since he attended St Giles Primary School and often visits the church.
St Giles’ Community Role
The church is one of seven Mission Hub Churches across the Diocese of St Asaph, serving both the local Wrexham community and visitors from around the world. St Giles is also a popular stop for tourists, including fans of the international hit series Welcome to Wrexham.
The churchyard also contains the tomb of Elihu Yale, a key benefactor of Yale University.
St Giles has already launched a community choir and plans to hire a Music Outreach Worker to enhance musical opportunities.
Coleg Cambria’s Response
Gareth Jones, Assistant Principal and Head of Yale Sixth Form at Coleg Cambria, said the project provided students with valuable real-world experience. He expressed pride in Szymon’s achievement and excitement about seeing the design used for years to come.
What Happens Next
St Giles will host a reception for all competition participants as a thank-you for their contributions. We will soon launch the new branding, including a refreshed website.
